Torrid start at the plate leads Fairborn phenom to think big

Some athletes set goals. Brittany Duncan is going for it all.
“I want to break every school record that I can,” the Fairborn High School softball sensation said.
Don’t put it past her. Through eight games, the sophomore is batting .864 with 15 RBIs. She has 19 hits in 22 at-bats, including five doubles, a triple and three over-the-fence home runs.
She has drawn eight walks and twice been hit by pitches, which means she has reached base 29 times in 32 plate appearances. Look out, Tiffany Smith; the Tiffin University sophomore holds most Fairborn batting marks.
“She’s always been good,” said Tim Duncan, Brittany’s dad and her hitting coach. “But this year, she’s proved it to herself. She knows what she can do.”
Short of walking her intentionally, as powerful Pickerington North did twice with nobody on base recently, there would appear to be no stopping Duncan, who hit better than .500 as a freshman.
In addition to hits, she has been accumulating nicknames — “Boulder” for her biceps, “BDunc” for short. And there’s “RT,” which stands for “Racing Turtle,” a reference to the one part of her game that might be below average. “I’m not quick, but I move really good,” Duncan explained. “So Coach (Bob Shively) calls me that.”
A 5-foot-10 catcher who also has played third base, Duncan is already receiving feelers from colleges. In large part due to her association with the Miami Valley Express, a premier summer travel team, she is on the radar of any coach who matters.
If Duncan is leaning in one direction, it would be south. She talks of playing at either Kentucky or Tennessee, but at 15, she doesn’t have to think about that now. Uppermost are those goals and how striving for them will help the Skyhawks win.
“I’m not in it for me,” Duncan is quick to point out. “You play for the person next to you. I’ve been taught that since I was little.”
Fairborn is 4-4, but two losses have come against Pickerington North, the team that stopped pitching to Duncan after she had gone 3-for-3 with a homer and two doubles.
“There was one out and nobody on when they walked her intentionally, leading 9-7,” Shively recalled. “Next inning, they intentionally walked her again, up by four runs.
“They had seen enough.”

Southwest Ohio Huddle
Spring is often the season for rain showers, postponed games and a scramble to re-arrange the hectic schedule. Whether good or bad, it’s also a time for coaching changes. Fairfield, one of the largest high schools in Ohio, had a tough task last week. They same can be said for any pitcher facing Fairborn’s Brittany Duncan.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brittany Duncan, Fairborn, softball: Sophomore catcher has tormented area pitchers with an incredible .864 batting average through eight games. She has 19 hits in 22 at-bats and has reached base 29 times total in 32 (eight walsk, twice been hit by pitches). Duncan has 15 RBIs, five doubles, a triple and three over-the-fence home runs. Powerful Pickerington North walked her twice intentionally after she went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run.
